Open Text Based Assessment (OTBA) for Class IX to XI
Highlights of OTBA:
In June 2013 CBSE announced the open book system for grade 9th to 11. The weightage of open book exam was set as 15-20% of the marks. It was stated that the schools will be supplied with the text material in few months before the commencement of Summative Assessment – 2.
Now CBSE announces the release of material for open book exams. The OTBA is supposed to be conducted only for Std IX and XI as part of the final exams held in March.
The text material will be in the form of article; a case study; a diagram; a concept/mind map; a picture or a cartoon; problem/situation; based on the concept taught to the students during second term.
Board will set the question paper, and the same material will be supplied to students at the time of examination along with answer books and question paper. The students need to find the answer using the material supplied and they don’t need to study that part at home.
While for Std IX, the material for all main subjects (Hindi, English, Social Science, Science and Mathematics) were released, text material for Biology, Economics and Geography have been released for Std XI. The OTBA will remain restricted to only the said subjects this year.
According to CBSE, the main objective of introducing OTBA is to relieve the students from the burden of mugging up of content and provide opportunities in acquiring skills of information processing, comprehension, analysis and inference
Unlike regular exams, students appearing in these exams will be allowed to refer to the provided text and pictorial content even during the exam-hours.
OTBA will have questions of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and some of which may be subjective, creative and open-ended
All textual material will be closely related to carefully chosen concepts extracted from the syllabi.
So, OTBA - Open Text Based Assessment is all set to go. All the Best!
